A Mediatheque for Casablanca

Cross section

An urban carpet and wandering people, who explore and discover all exciting new features that modern media provide to them. We envisioned a world where the boundaries of the building do not prove to be their physical limits. We wanted the building to extend into the public, and the public to be invited in. Therefore, we thought of our building not in terms of walls and doors, but in terms of a free-flowing carpet, with dispersed white boxes (providing services). To regulate, limit and structure public movement, we introduced several levels of filters.

Entrance from the train station, next to our site, happens naturally and gently. In the mediatheque people can use services, such as the library, media desks, or one of the kiosks. Planned and unplanned services integrate: visits to temporary exhibitions or the theatre can be varied with having lunch, or watching spontaneous performances on either of the public stages. When the theatre hall is not used, musicians can use the rehearsal rooms below the tribune.
